When-Its-OverZombies have been done to death (no pun intended). The dead rise, the world comes to a halt and humans are the true monsters, blah, blah, brains. It’s this slow repetition that When It’s Over hopes to end.

When It’s Over is a new free to read web comic series that takes a different approach to the zombie genre by answering the question “what would happen if the zombies lost?” In this world, humanity has eradicated the horde after 5 long years of fighting and now the only people left are the ones who were willing to betray those who trusted them most.

Set in the forested American northwest, four of these not-so-innocent survivors wander the land, carrying the weight of the broken world on their shoulders, looking for a home, and hoping to keep their terrible secrets.

“It’s like Y the Last Man meets The Walking Dead,” says Johannes Vick (penciler, inker).

The first 2 pages of the comic series will be available on their website: whenitsovercomic.tumblr.com, today at 5:30 pm EST. Like many webcomics today, When It’s Over is free to read, running completely on donations and Patreon, which also goes live today. The rewards for patrons range from pencil sketches to featuring their own original characters in the series.

Helming this project with Vick is Roman Howell (author, letterer), an award-winning screenwriter who has been developing the When It’s Over world for more than 4 years. “One of my friends asked me how I would survive the zombie apocalypse, to which I said, ‘I would grab everything I could, throw it in a truck and drive across the country until it was over.’ This was actually the inspiration for my first main character,” says Howell.

Along with the release of the first page is the premiere of a teaser trailer, directed by Howell, of the entire series, which can be seen here:

Starring in the trailer is Joey Perillo (Twelve Monkeys, The Sopranos,Veep).

To be able to talk with fans of When It’s Over, Howell and Vick host a weekly podcast “Sketch & Scotch” every Sunday at 10pm EST. Here readers can watch Vick work on the latest page while the two bicker over comics.
