What’s ‘Jin Village’ About?
Where only terror lives!
For generations, the inhabitants of the remote Jin Village in China had almost no contact with the outside world. Nearby villages whispered of murder and odd disappearances. Then the Jin villagers vanished.
Now, one hundred years later, American historian Malcolm Wang and a team of archaeologists arrive at Jin Village to excavate the ruins. They uncover evidence of a long history of human sacrifice and cannibalism. What Malcolm and his companions don’t know is that Jin Village is still very much alive. There is something out there, a dangerous remnant of a forgotten past…and it has woken up.
Our ‘Jin Village Review
Jin Village is not your typical zombie searching for the uninfected type novel. Jin Village is more of a supernatural horror that incorporates zombies into the story. Based more on Chinese folklore and ghost stories, this novel by Vincent Stoia tells the story of the village itself, once a thriving jade mining operation until something goes horribly wrong.
Centuries later, the Chinese government is building a pipeline that will go right through where Jin Village used to be. Before the major construction starts, archeologists and historians want a chance to record and excavate the village that disappeared. Enter Sean Yang, a Chinese-American student who is offered the chance to assist his stepfather, Malcolm Wang, professor of Chinese History. Sean accepts the opportunity not knowing what he’s really getting into. Wang’s previous assistant took it upon herself to venture to the village site and look around. It’s reported that she was attacked and killed by some kind of wild animal. The plot thickens.
Delving into more of the Chinese culture and folklore, Jin Village gives the average reader an inside look at a culture that has been relatively secluded for centuries. The core of the story revolves around the ancient foot binding of young girls in China. While this is a repulsive and mutilating act, sadly, it did happen. This all feeds into the plot where ancient evil is resurrected and thrives in the ruins of Jin Village. What starts as a few workers missing leads to a full blown reanimation of the excavated bodies and moves to a horrific showdown with evil incarnate.
Sean must face not only a language issue, he does know Mandarin, but also deal with being in close proximity to his new stepfather of six months, separated from his girlfriend, working with an attractive assistant to the Chinese government representative, and then deal with jiang shi (Chinese folklore zombie like creatures) and finally, confront the evil that inhabits the Jade Mountains that overlook Jin Village.
Vincent gives us an inside look at Chinese culture, mythology, folklore and ghost stories. What I found amazing was the similarities between other cultures and their shared folklore. Jin Village is an outstanding horror novel that perfectly blends mysticism, mythology and cultural differences together to create an edge of your seat, nail biting, adrenaline charged good old fashioned ghost story.
Jin Village, don’t miss out on it.
