Our Zombies on a Plane Review

Zombies on a Plane is a short novella about a zombie infection that takes place inside a commercial aircraft. What makes this stand out from other stories is it takes place in a world has accepted that zombies exist and has taken steps to contain and neutralize the infection before it gets out of hand. At the airport, the TSA is more a bio hazard detection and containment agency. All passengers are required to have their body temperature checked prior to boarding and there are additional questions asked such as if they had visited a hazardous area or been exposed to anyone that was infected.

With all these precautions in place there is still a margin for error and potential infected to slip past. That brings us to the plot of this work. Patrick, a traveler from overseas, is rushing to get to his flight while struggling with a large present for his daughter. Tif, a gothic teenager is attempting to deal with being sent to the UK for six weeks. Rachel, a flight attendant is preparing for the flight.

Toss in Trevor aka Laptop Man and Brendan and we have a fun filled flight full of freaky flesh eaters. (Say that three times fast).

Imagine a crowded, wide body commercial plane and then toss in an outbreak of an infectious disease. Yeah, that’s about the worse thing that could happen on a plane besides the sewage containment system backing up and shooting pressurized waste into the passenger area. Okay, that is pretty much the worse thing that could happen. More to the point, we’re talking zombies on a plane. I mean literal wacked out, eat people type zombies. One of the passengers is infected and they spread it through the rest of the passengers and into the cockpit. That leaves a small group of survivors who have barricaded themselves in the galley with no other option but to storm the cockpit and retake control of the plane. Easier said than done. Relying on material and items on hand, this small group armors up and takes the fight to the zombies. Smashing heads with a laptop, a bowling ball and anything available, our intrepid survivors batter their way through the flesh eaters like a freight train through a mountain pass.

Peck’s writing style is minimalistic yet descriptive. The characters are well depicted with believable interaction given the premise. The world that is created is done in such a way that the threat of infection and zombies is acceptable and that the major outbreak must have occurred some time in the past. Zombies on a Plane is a great read, full of suspense, adventure and horror.
