PvZ2

EA and Popcap games have finally announced a date for the upcoming Plants vs Zombies 2: It’s about time. It will be coming out on July 18th for the iOS!

That’s right, the iOS and nothing else. So those of you with your iPhones and iPads will be able to enjoy the game for free. Yes, free. It’s a freemium game! That means while the game is technically free, there will still be an in-game store that will probably let you unlock stuff more quickly and give you in-game bonuses for real world money.

If anyone needs me I’m going to be in the angry dome.

*sigh*

OK, I started to get worried about the future of Plants vs Zombies back when Popcap fired George Fan, the creator of the original PvZ. I want to say I’m angrier than I am, but I kind of expected this, so I’ve already had time to digest the news a little. You see, EA, the company that bought Popcap games a while ago, don’t exactly have the best reputation.

While there’s nothing inherently wrong with “freemium” style games, they have an annoying tendency to not be worth playing unless you’re willing to shell out more money than you would for a regularly-priced game. They’re often called “pay-to-win” games, and for good reason.

I suppose I should reserve judgement until I actually play the game, but… Oh, wait, I don’t have any Apple mobile devices. I can’t play it. I suppose there’s the possibility that this exclusivity is just for a specified period of time since I can’t imagine EA wants to cut out such a large potential customer base entirely. But it’s still darned annoying for those of us who don’t have any iOS products. EA and Popcap, I am disappointed in you.

Anyways, watch the trailer if you haven’t yet. It’s actually quite clever and worth your time.
