Well, I’m going to do something a little different this week. While I’m sure there are plenty of Kickstarter and IndieGoGo campaigns out there, I wanted to highlight a few projects I’ve had my eye on for a while. You see, while Kickstarter and all that is the current hot thing, the idea isn’t all that young. A lot of companies and people have for a long time funded projects or products via pre-orders. Generally speaking, when a person or company doesn’t have the necessary cash and can’t afford to take a loan out, but they know they can sell the product once it’s released, they’ll set up an indefinite pre-order period. Once they have enough pre-orders to make manufacturing the product worth their while, they do so. The pre-orders are fulfilled, and the company/person should have enough product left over to sell to people who didn’t pre-order. Really, that’s pretty much was the new crowdfunding model is, they just set a deadline instead of having an indefinite period of pre-orders. While this means that the company can remain more financially stable, it usually sucks for the first people to pre-order, because it can potentially take years before they get what they paid for. To that end, here are a few projects that are following that model that I think you should look into.

deadwintercover

First up is the second printed volume of Dead Winter. Dead Winter is one of my very favorite webcomics. I’d put it up there with the best of ’em. He[‘s been collecting to get the second volume into print for a while now, and for some reason, it’s stalled. Now, I helped fund the first book, and while it took a while to get the physical copy, it was worth that wait. The art is great, the story is compelling, and the action is pretty awesome. So, go on, help him print volume two. (And pick up volume one while you’re at it.) Both books are just $18 apiece.

Next, we have two games from Lock ‘N Load Publishing. You may remember them from my review of All Things Zombie. Well, they have two other zombie related games in the works, but both of them need to be funded first. The nice thing about Lock ‘N Load is that they give a discount to those who pre-order. So you might have to wait a while to get the game, but you’ll be saving between 10% – 35%. That’s nothing to sneeze at. The games are called “Zombie War” and “Run, Fight, or Die!” You can check out the descriptions on their respective webpages to see if they might be right for you.

zpocalypse2

And finally, back to Kickstarter, I’d just like to plug Zpocalypse again. They’ve made several stretch goals already, but from what I’ve gathered, they have a lot more in store. You’ve still got almost a month to decide, though. So at least check it out.
