Zombielennia

So if you know me or have read my profile you that zombies loose in a high school puts a smile on my face. It’s not that I have some dark desire to unleash the undead upon teenagers. Rather I just love the irony of it, because be honest, your high school was filled with zombies too. Now if you want to clear any traces of happiness from my face with the force of an A-bomb then all you need to do is put on a high school art student’s final project where they filmed a slice of bread in time-lapse to capture the bleak nature of their suburban existence.  But a handful of students in the Netherlands may have just produced something to prove me wrong.

“Zombielennia” is a movie created by the teachers and students of a high school in the Netherlands. The trailer is about ten minutes long and opens with a group of students in a biology class. The teacher unveils a strange animal (an albino bunny) from the jungles of Haiti. The animal of course bites the teacher and as you can surely guess – cue the zombie madness.

There were two things about “Zombielennia” that impressed me the most. First, it had better production value and editing than a lot of the movies that find their way onto the SyFy network. And secondly, it appears that the entire school was in on the making of the film. I was not able to find much background info on “Zombielennia” and what little I could, Facebook’s translations completely butchered, but it’s clear that these students basically had the run of the entire school to make their movie. Being a teacher I know that it can be damn near impossible to organize the line for tater tots, let alone an entire school of hormonal teenage zombies, but somehow these students and teachers did and I have to say they did so with gusto.

The make-up is pretty much what you would expect from a high school zombie movie, though I have to admit the few CGI scenes with blood splatter where fun. The students also did an impressive job trashing the hallways and giving their school an apocalyptic feel. My favorite scene of all involves one girl tossing another to a rabid horde of zombies because even in a zombie outbreak “Jenny” will find some way to get back at that skank “Sally”. Overall, “Zombielennia” was a fun ten minutes and worth watching if for nothing else than to hear its great black metal soundtrack and to make you wish that you too went to high school in the Netherlands.
