You may or may not have heard of lostzombies.com. It is a zombie themed social network. The goal of the site is to create a community generated book and eventually a movie. While the movie is still in the works you can find dead inside at a few of your local book stores. Dead inside: do not enter is a compilation of notes from survivors of the zombie apocalypse. The reader is meant to believe that these notes were found is a backpack in a town called Colfax which is located in Northern California.
The book starts with a time line detailing the events of the first year. It starts as you see a lot of zombie books and movies. A simple seasonal flu. As it starts to mutate you see society crumbling until the flu eventually becomes a super flu strain known as the Campion virus.
The thing that really set this book apart is that it is written completely through handwritten notes and text messages. There are scraps of paper, backs of receipts, and some photos. They are written by survivors from all walks of life. Mothers, soldiers, children and people who were bitten. It details the everyday things that you or I would take completely for granted.
This story just fits together so well. You can feel them building up to something and you can almost see society crumbling under these peoples feet. It’s honestly heart breaking that you can’t help some of them.
There are a few notes that you can tell by the handwriting are written by the same person. With those notes you can see these people growing more desperate and more panicked. These notes let you really look into the world of this book. Things are starting to get worse for these people and they’re starting to turn against each other.
This book definitely makes it onto my list of top tens. I love it. I love how it’s all handwritten. It’s beautifully put together. The simplicity of some of these notes really adds to the beauty of it and the time line of events at the start really helps you lay out what has happened.
Now…as you’re sitting at your computer you probably have a window somewhere. If you look outside you can see boring everyday things. The mailman, local kids playing, your dog. You know that society isn’t crumbling. You know that when you go out for dinner tonight that you’re not gonna have to worry about being dinner. You’re aware that these terrible things aren’t happening. That there aren’t hordes of the undead coming to rip your guts out…and yet…when you’re reading this book you feel drawn into the world. The time line is yours. Maybe some of the notes are too. You’ll see yourself and your friends on the pages. You’ll feel the loss that some of them detail. I can bet that while you’re reading, if you hear a noise outside and even though you know it’s not possible, the first thing you think will be ZOMBIE!
