REVIEW: Dead Stay Dead by: Paul Jessup
This book was a very humorous read and brimming with gore. The gore throughout the book was grotesque and admirably composed. Some of the gore scenes made me flinch a little at the very thought of it.
Characters: The characters in this book were nice and well drawn. The characters were personable and likable which made for an enjoyable read. The dialogue complimented each character’s personality well and it made for relatable characters.
Humour: This is a very funny book. The comedy situated into this story is mostly character Humour. Very much like ‘Shaun of the Dead’. This was reminiscent of Shaun of the Dead and made for and the book had me laughing right from the beginning. A specific scene involving the ‘Ghost whisperer’ Natasha talking with a zombie was quite hilarious.
Gore: There was a lot of gore situated within this small book. It was almost as though the pages were sticking together because from the loads of gore on the pages.
Writing: The writing itself wasn’t too bad. I think this book could have used a rewrite to help with flow. Some of the scenes were stilted and didn’t make for a concise read. What I did enjoy was the Dialogue. The dialogue was very well written, usually most dialogue scenes are cliché and lacks depth, but the dialogue writing was well done and related to each character appropriately. Whenever the dialogue was a little cliché in this book, it was intentional because he was trying to pull off a bit more characterized humour.
Overall: This is a quick, gory and funny read. If you want to read a ‘Shaun of the Dead’ type story than I advise giving this novella a try.
