REVIEW: Dead Meat by Chris and Patrick Williams
Dead Meat is not a book per se. It is an ongoing zombie web series. The authors have been posting a chapter every week for almost a year now. The series will conclude in a few weeks and their goal is to have their story published.
Dead Meat revolves around the life of Gavin. A lone survivor trying to figure out the mess he is in. He doesn’t know exactly what’s going on but all he knows is that a form of rabies has been unleashed on the people in his town. All he wants to do is make it to his family’s home and check on his parents and sister. On this journey he meets up with Benny, another lone survivor. The two pair up as Gavin continues his adventure. Along the way they encounter swarms of infected humans which become known as ‘bees’ for their swarming like behavior. They also come across military units (exterminators) with orders to eliminate anyone trying to cross the quarantine zone and kill all infected. With a streak of luck the two survivors make it out of the infected town alive. But what have they escaped? They soon realize that their salvation becomes a bigger battle for survival. The virus had spread to the surrounding cities and soon will be around the word.
Gavin continues making his way towards his family. With ever step he takes, with every ‘bee’ he kills the hope that his parents are still alive fades. Gavin and Benny come across a few more survivors. Rickett, the war veteran that had no idea something was wrong in the world and Henry, the girl who witnessed her family’s death by at the hands of the exterminators and is out for revenge. The 4 four pair up and not only have to deal with the infected lurking around every corner but also the fighting that ensues between them. Dead Meat is a real story of survival.
Dead Meat is a wonderful series to follow. I was not aware of the series until I was contact by Chris. I began on chapter one and now I’ve caught up. The plot of the story is brilliantly thought out and the characters all have realistic traits. The all time favorite character is Mav. Even though this crazy, outspoken Disc Jockey only makes a few appearances it’s enough to make him the most lovable character.
Dead Meat is a great story but it is far from perfect. There were a few things I disliked. For instance, the beginning of the story is lacking something. The first few opening scenes are dull and don’t have much excitement in them to grab the reader’s attention. If it wasn’t for Mav’s character I might have given up reading the story, or at least skipping (skipped) the first few chapters. There were numerous spelling mistakes but both Patrick and Chris have insured me that the story on the site is far from finished. Once the series is concluded they will go back and make corrections and add new content to make the story more interesting. The last complaint I had was the lack of knowledge when it comes to firearms. They refer magazines as ‘clips’ and cartridges as ‘bullets’. These are common mistakes that writers make. I brought this to their attention and they will be making appropriate revisions
Overall the series is worth taking a look. It has everything you could want in a zombie novel and then some. Once they do their revision and corrections I can see this web series getting published. So please show your support to the authors and check out their web site.
