REVIEW: Life Room

I had the extreme pleasure of watching an independent film known as Life Room and honestly, my first impression was that it would be a disappointing film or at least a mediocre attempt at a zombie flick but I was DEAD wrong. This movie has everything that a zombie movie should have right down to the eerie music. The story follows a group of survivors that take refuge in a an abandoned room inside a church while they struggle to get along as well as flashback to each one’s individual story of loss. There was just a couple of minor complains about this movie but I still loved it.

First, lets talk about the acting. It was decent acting but what I enjoyed was the character development, which is something that every zombie movie should have. This movie follows its characters and makes you feel for their losses or their struggles… if the actors and actresses did a little better of a performance then it would be believable. Plus, there were some very powerful scenes that I thought just tipped the scale on this one. The dialogue, sometimes, was written like natural dialogue, which is something that I love to see in horror films to give it that realistic feel to it.

I think, and this is just me talking, that in a way, this movie is sort of like a tribute to past zombie movies that may have inspired the writer and the director since it bares some similarities to Night of the Living Dead and the score is very reminiscent of Zombi. What I also enjoyed was that this movie was sort of redefining the rules of zombies. In most zombie movies, the dead are able to walk regardless of rigor mortis but in this movie… it eventually settles in and the zombies can’t move. It was a great treat to see this in a zombie movie once and for all. Plus, I really enjoyed the zombie design.

The only complaint that I have is the audio needs to be balanced out a bit since the movie trucks along at a regular volume but when somebody yells or screams or gets hit, the audio spikes and causes me to get startled. That’s really the only complaint, other then that I enjoyed the noir looking atmosphere, the story, the development and everything else. I would really recommend you check this out. Someone give the director the money to redo this movie with a higher budget and bring it to the big screen, you’ll be guaranteed to get a lot of fans!
